Solar power is energy harnessed from the sun and converted into electric power or thermal energy. Ever since the discovery of solar power, there has been an increase in items that use this alternative source of power. Solar energy is clean and readily available and has reduced the amount of money used to pay for energy and fuels. The use of this power has significantly reduced the level of pollution as well as enhanced the sustainability of many manufacturing processes. When it comes to ponds, pumps are highly necessary to ensure the maintenance and cleanliness of the pond.

Pumps can be classified into two broad categories of submersible pond pumps and external pond pumps. Those that are submersible operate while submerged in the water since the water acts as a lubricant as well as a coolant for the pump. External pumps are placed on the surface surrounding the pond then pipes are used to connect the pump to the pond. In order to reduce the cost of energy to operate a pond, solar pond pumps were developed. Solar pond pumps run on electric power generated from converted solar energy and are more suitable for external pond pumps. The components of such pond pumps include the controller, the pump itself and solar panels. The controller’s function is to match the output power with the input power of the pump as well as provide protection to the pump when the voltage is too small. This protection helps to reduce the need for maintenance of the pump. The pump performs the usual activities of circulating the water, aerating it and filtering it using the electrical energy from the solar panels.

The size of the solar panels required depends on the size of the pump, the amount of water being injected, and the amount of solar radiance available in the area. Some pumps come with the panels already attached to them. However, for those that do not have the panels, one has to purchase them separately and ask for assistance when setting up the pump. The voltage of the solar pump motors can be direct current or alternating current. Direct current motors are suitable where the amount of energy to be used is small like a pumping water in a small pond, waterfall, or fountain.

During the night, however, solar power is not available. The panels have energy stored in batteries to help them continue running during the night until the next morning when solar energy returns. Another significant advantage of the solar pumps is that little wiring is required which makes the easy to set up. All that is required is to place the solar panel in a spot that is exposed to as much sunlight as possible.
